With over 1 million young people between the age of 16 and 24 unemployed, the option of starting a business - making a job, not taking a job, is becoming increasingly more relevant in today’s difficult economic times. With one in five graduates now unemployed, fewer young people are considering going to university as having a degree no longer guarantees employment. Coupled with increased tuition fees, young people are discovering that starting a business is an option to consider but they simply don’t know how or where to start!
TESTIMONIAL FROM WILTSHIRE COUNCIL:
Wiltshire Council commissioned The Young Entrepreneur Society (Y.E.S.) to run a course for young people employed under the Wiltshire Potential Future Jobs Fund Programme. The course lasted five days and was attended by eight people from seven separate employers.
The attendees were all aged between 18 - 24 from a very broad spectrum of knowledge, qualifications, experience and confidence.
The YES approach and presentation from the three tutors was inspirational, engaging and interesting. All attendees were very enthused by it and
stated they had gained confidence as a result of attending.
Two were able to identify a shared business idea and were planning to present it to a Wiltshire wide new business competition.
Quotes from the feedback forms include:
' They really helped me grow and get excited.'
'Loved the whole week! Thank you!! I am so grateful!! Really inspirational and helpful!'
'Very helpful and offered 1 on 1 support and guidance throughout the 12 steps'.
'Throughout my time on the YES course I have learnt so much. I really appreciate the opportunity and will put what I've learnt into action.'
'Very good trainers, all very approachable and friendly'.
YES Education (formerly Young Entrepreneur Society) aims to upturn the statistics and change the ‘one in five young people unemployed’ to ‘one in five young people start a business’!
Councils have a responsibility to address their youth unemployment situation in their area and despite Government cuts, there are some funds available to address the problem.
YES has successfully run 5 day Business Courses featuring The 12 Steps to Success to teach young people entrepreneurial and life skills. Starting a business is not just about understanding accounts and cashflows, it is also about developing yourself as a person, motivation, finding your life purpose, goal setting and confidence building. With these essential life skills young people are more prepared for life itself as well as how to start a business. Participants DO NOT need a business idea to take the course, they can develop their ideas over the 5 days!
Please watch this short video of delegates from Wiltshire. Two of the delegates featured have started a business, two others are working on their ideas and the rest of the group managed to secure employment with their new found confidence levels or have returned to education.
The video below is by delegates in Wiltshire who took the YES Business Course in September 2010:
The 12 Steps has been designed by a young entrepreneur, Carly Ward, YES Founder & CEO and aims at young people just like her who wanted to know how to start a business. Having interviewed some of the top entrepreneurs in the UK, it is their advice, knowledge and business tips that form the main content of the programme. Delegates on the YES 5 day Business Course learn from the best on how to be the best.
Please Note: Participants will learn that being an entrepreneur is totally different from being employed. Entrepreneurs are self starters and do things themselves. YES does not start businesses for the participants, they need to do their own research and set up their business themselves.
Please see The 12 Steps for more information on the programme content for each step and the format. You can download Step 1 FREE to see how it looks (this is the online version). The programme is interactive, engaging and fun and the 5 day course has group and individual activities throughout. By the end of the programme, most delegates will have a business idea or at the very least, they will know if entrepreneurship is for them and whether they should pursue this route or an alternative. This is about life direction as well. No delegate will leave the course not having learned more about themselves, what they should be doing and what life is like in the world of business. All delegates are better prepared for the workplace too.
